Humanoid robots for research and education: every price a school can actually get

Booster's K1 puts a programmable walking humanoid in a lab from $5,999, and the classroom standard, a NAO V6, runs $16,990 through its US distributor. The trap is the $13,500 Unitree G1, which says on its own store page that it does not support secondary development.
Buy a humanoid robot for research or a classroom and you are in the segment that actually buys these machines today. Not homes. Universities, community college CTE labs, K-12 STEM programs and corporate R&D teams hold the purchase orders, and have for close to twenty years. What changed in the last year is the shopping list, and it changed hard.
On July 5, 2026, in Incheon, the first full 11 versus 11 humanoid soccer match on hardware ended 4-0, B-Human of Bremen over HTWK Robots of Leipzig. RoboCup's own writeup says both sides played on robots designed by Booster Robotics. The league that owned this sport for years ran on one mandatory robot, the NAO.
So the buyer's question has moved. It used to be which NAO bundle. Now it is which of three tiers, at prices running from $599.99 to quote-only.
What an institution can buy, August 2026
Every price was checked on the seller's own page on August 7, 2026. "Cart" means a purchasing officer can complete the order online; "Inquiry" means a quote and a lead time.

The trap: the cheapest walking humanoids in that table are not programmable
Unitree's store page for the R1 carries this note, in full: "This product does not support secondary development. For customization needs, please select the EDU edition. Please contact our sales team (sales_global@unitree.cc) to purchase the EDU edition." The identical sentence sits on the G1 page. Unitree's spec comparison marks secondary development "YES" for G1 EDU and leaves it blank for the base G1.
Unitree does not spell out what secondary development covers, so take the pessimistic reading: the $4,900 R1 and the $13,500 G1 are demo machines, and the programmable version of either is the EDU edition.
The EDU tier is no longer entirely dark. The R1's own variant picker now lists R1 EDU (White) and R1 EDU (Red) at $10,500, listed as available, on the same page that tells you to email sales. That is the first publicly displayed price I can find for a Unitree EDU humanoid. The G1 EDU has no such variant, just a contact-sales line, and resellers have historically quoted it at multiples of the base machine.
A $4,900 sticker that becomes $10,500 once you add the ability to program it is a 114% jump, and the widest gap between advertised price and usable price I have found anywhere on the humanoid price ladder.
NAO is still the classroom standard, under new management
NAO has been the default teaching humanoid since 2008, and the install base is why: Wikipedia's NAO entry cites over 13,000 units in use in more than 70 countries as of 2024, and Maxtronics claims "More than 20 000 NAO produced, sold and delivered."
Maxtronics is the part educators have not caught up with. aldebaran.com now redirects, with a 301, to maxtronics.com, a French company in Issy-les-Moulineaux selling NAO6 and NAO7. Wikipedia's account is that Aldebaran entered receivership in France in June 2025 and Maxvision acquired its assets in July 2025. I have not sourced that chain to a primary filing, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed. The redirect is checkable in one click.
For a US school the practical channel is a distributor. RobotLAB lists the NAO V6 Standard Edition at $16,990, and unlike a China-direct order that price is a bundle: robot, charger and battery, a Choregraphe Unlimited license, the full SDK and API, curriculum, a one-year warranty, and US-based support. Listed specs: 574 mm tall, 5.48 kg, 25 degrees of freedom, Intel Atom E3845, roughly 60 minutes of active runtime. RobotLAB also leases, which matters when the money is capital rather than operating budget.
NAO7 is in development with a new CPU and GPU and local AI. Its page says plainly that "its price and release date have not yet been announced." Do not build a two-year curriculum plan around it yet.
The competition circuit is the spec sheet that matters
Watch what wins, because that is the platform that survives twenty undergraduates. RoboCup's Standard Platform League, a NAO monopoly by design, no longer exists on its own. RoboCup's page says the Humanoid Soccer League "was formed through the unification of the Humanoid League (HL) and Standard Platform League (SPL) and will take place for the first time at the RoboCup 2026." Booster Robotics claims on its homepage that at RoboCup 2026, "38 of 59 teams competed on Booster robots." That is a vendor claim, so weigh it as one. The 4-0 result in Incheon is RoboCup's own reporting, and it is consistent.
Booster's education pitch is a four-level curriculum ladder, from remote-control play through block coding, Python, ROS 2 and YOLO, up to sim-to-real and multi-agent reinforcement learning. No prices on that page. K1 is the only Booster SKU with a public number, and its Buy Now button still opens an inquiry form.
Three tiers, and who each is for
Under $1,000, the bench tier. Hiwonder's TonyPi and AiNex are Raspberry Pi kits that walk, see and run Python or ROS. Twenty of them fit inside a budget one G1 would eat. Small in size, real in software, which is the correct trade for teaching. If your program would rather build than buy, the open-source humanoid projects with published parts lists start lower still.
$5,999 to $16,990, the lab tier. Booster K1, Unitree R1 EDU, ROBOTIS OP3, NAO V6. This is where a real research project lives. OP3 and NAO are the safe institutional buys: US stock, US support, and ROBOTIS links a tax-exempt application from its own footer. The China-direct platforms are cheaper and newer and put the paperwork on you.
Quote-only, the flagship tier. G1 EDU, Booster T1 and T2, LimX TRON 1. Full size, and no number you can put in a budget request until sales replies. Unitree's spec page tops the G1 EDU out at 43 joints. I could not find published joint counts for the rest.
One note applies to the China-direct orders and nothing else here. Unitree quotes shipping between $300 and $1,200, the customer is responsible for all customs duties, taxes and import clearance, and no US repair path is described anywhere. That is the argument for the dealer premium covered in where to buy a humanoid robot, and for an institution it is usually the right call.
What I would shortlist
A K-12 STEM program: TonyPi at $599.99, in quantity. A university HRI lab that needs a robot students will still be using in five years: NAO V6 at $16,990, for the software ladder and the warranty. A locomotion or reinforcement-learning lab: Booster K1 from $5,999 or the R1 EDU at $10,500, and price both, because the gap is $4,500 and the ecosystems differ.
