Humanoid vs robot vs android: the terms, untangled

Robot, humanoid, and android are three nested boxes, not three synonyms: every android is a humanoid, every humanoid is a robot, and almost nothing shipping in 2026 is an android. When a listing says "android," check for silicone skin and a human face; otherwise you are looking at a humanoid in a marketing costume.
Humanoid vs robot vs android: these three words get used as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. The clean way to hold it in your head: they are nested boxes. Every android is a humanoid. Every humanoid is a robot. Not every robot is a humanoid, and very few humanoids are androids. Get the nesting right and half the confusing headlines sort themselves out.
The nesting, in one picture
- Robot is the biggest box: any programmable machine that senses and acts in the world. A robot vacuum is a robot. A robot dog is a robot. A factory arm bolted to the floor is a robot. Shape is not part of the definition.
- Humanoid is a robot with a human body plan: head, torso, two arms, and legs, built to work in human spaces. Shape is the definition here. (Long version: What is a humanoid robot?)
- Android is the smallest box: a humanoid specifically engineered to look convincingly human, with skin-like covering and a human face, not an obviously mechanical shell.
The trap is that "android" gets thrown at any humanoid because it sounds futuristic. Almost no working humanoid in 2026 is actually an android. They mostly look like machines on purpose.
1X's NEO is the perfect example of "on purpose." It wears a knit suit, it comes in three tasteful colorways, and its face is a blank fabric oval with a light ring. The company could have given it eyes. It deliberately did not. That single design choice keeps NEO firmly in the humanoid box, well clear of the android one.
The four terms you actually run into

Two footnotes on that table. "Android" is also Google's phone OS, which is why the word is nearly useless for search and why this site prefers "humanoid" for machines. And "anthropomorphic" is the weasel word: a robot can be anthropomorphic (it has something finger-shaped) without being a humanoid at all.
Where the real machines sit
Robots that are not humanoids. The Unitree Go2 quadruped, a Roomba, a mopping robot: all robots, none humanoid. Four legs or wheels, no human body plan. This is the vast majority of robots that actually work in homes today.
Humanoids that are not androids. This is where nearly every headline humanoid lives. The Unitree G1, 1X NEO, Figure 03, and Tesla Optimus all have the human body plan, and all of them look unmistakably like machines: exposed joints, plated shells, no attempt at a human face. They are humanoids, full stop. Calling Optimus an "android" is a category error. The shape is human; nothing on the surface is trying to be.
The android edge. True androids, humanoids finished to pass as human, are still mostly research and exhibition pieces (the Ameca-style expressive faces) rather than things you buy. The nearest commercial drift toward it is the "companionship economy" of biomimetic companions: TrendForce's July 2026 companion-robot forecast names the UBTech U1, described as an "ultra-biomimetic humanoid" with 88 degrees of freedom and silicone skin (TrendForce, 15 July 2026). Silicone skin and a biomimetic face are exactly what pushes a humanoid toward the android end of the box. A forecast naming an exemplar still tells you nothing about how the thing behaves in a room. Nobody outside a trade show has spent real time with a U1 yet, me included.

Two more words people mix in
- Bipedal just means "walks on two legs." It describes the legs and nothing else. Most humanoids are bipedal; a wheeled-base humanoid is not. A robot can be bipedal without being humanoid in any other way.
- Cyborg is a human body with machine parts integrated in. That is a person with augmentation, not a robot. It does not belong in this nesting at all, and nothing on this site is one.
Why this matters for what you buy
Which box a machine sits in decides both the price and the promise. "Robot" tells you almost nothing. "Humanoid" tells you it pays the two-legged balance tax to work in human spaces (and why it costs what it costs). "Android" adds a cosmetic layer, human-looking skin and face, that is expensive, largely uncommon in shipping products, and completely separate from whether the thing can actually do anything.
So when a listing shouts "android," read it as a marketing costume until proven otherwise, and go check the specs that matter: does it walk, where are its degrees of freedom, and can it act on its own.
